PORTAL and KEY GLOSSARY
Abkam: Ceann Olc’s senior scholar tasked with discovering the truth behind Eva’s disappearance.
Abigail: The house-bonded Kamalan that took Eva to Earth when she was born.
Aed (ēd): Fae god of the underworld.
Alioth: The capital of Augudece.
Alphard: The capital of Ra’Day.
Annad: A Sioc fae, and member of the Trusted Order.
Antediluvian: A sect of scholars at the Atheneum devoted to the study of ancient cultures and artifacts.
Atheneum at Alioth: The realm’s largest library and center for learning. This massive structure is a city unto itself and contains most of the collective knowledge of the realm.
Augudece (ɑ-gō-detch-ā): Augudece is the largest nation on the eastern continent. It boasts a vibrant culture and is home to two of the most magically inclined fae races: the Fiodoir, and the Visindi.
Aumynt: The standard of currency in Augudece. Aumynts are accepted in almost every nation on Faetir.
Belle: A Fiodoir fae and house-bonded Kamalan.
Beskytter: A fae that Walter Renée met in the traveling caravan.
Birgdir: A fae that Walter Renée met in the traveling caravan.
Bondi: A fae race native to the plains of Marcaug. They have the innate ability to affect the flora and the soil and ground. Because of this unique ability, most Bondi become farmers. However, their are highly sought after as battle mages.
Bradach (bræ-deck): The large bridge leading to Kamalan House from the town of Cuan.
Breithe (brɛ-tə): A wing of the Atheneum at Alioth. The Breithe wing holds most of the birth records of every fae in the realm.
The Brigands of Pel: A well-armed and hidden troupe of marauders. Well known for their violence and greed. The troupe that Eva, Brynjar, and Derek ran into was one such detachment of the Brigands.
Brynjar (brɛ-ner): A Sioc fae. Eva’s Most Trusted. Brynjar is a member of the Trusted Order and holds the formal title of Stonehand of Pel.
Cailin (kā-lin): The Island of Cailin is a large island off the eastern shore of Mardec. Kamalan House is located on Cailin as is the large tourist town of Cuan. It is a semi-independent province of Mardec.
Calder: A Sifr fae. Ceann Olc’s general sent ot Earth to kill Eva. Born, Eoghan (Owen), on the island of Cailin.
Captain Bridger: The fae that offered passage to the companions from Havn to Cuan.
Cara: A term used to describe a friend.
Ceann Olc (kān olk): A fae from Sioc and Voldsum heritage. The ruler of Deceau and the one trying to kill Eva.
Chameleon: A black ops designation for Mr. Roper’s spies. Someone who is able to blend in and adapt to the mission.
Cleaner: A black ops designation for Mr. Roper’s wet-work soldiers.
Códaithe (ko’d-ə-tɛ): An object that has been woven with magic and performs a certain function.
Amharc: A scrying stone; used to spy on someone.
Baile (bāl): Produces living quarters.
Bata: A specific códaithe used to determine a Kamalan’s bond.
Byssu: A códaithe woven to fire a glaspear
Ghrian (grin): Produces light as bright as the sun.
Rólegur (ról-gōr): Gives its user silent footsteps
Scair (scar): A melding stone; allows its users to access each others memories.
Comhrac: The Enkelt warrior Calder encountered on Reisende.
Cothrom Sea: The body of water separating Mardec from its semi-independent province of Northern Mardec.
Cowboy: A black ops designation for Mr. Roper’s computer and telecomm team.
Cosan Pass: The only navigable mountain pass between Mardec and Deceau.
The Crossroads: The way station for all destinations. Am ethereal plane where all destinations and locations exist in congruence.
Cuan (kwɑn): A large tourist town on the northern coast of Cailin.
Deceau (dā-kɑ): The nation home to Ceann Olc and the Voldsum fae. Most of Deceau is covered with dense rainforests.
DeMarc: The nation bordering Augudece to the north. DeMarc boasts many lush forests and wide plains.
Derek Ascot: Eva’s trusty assistant.
Dia: Fae goddess of life.
Elda: A fae that Walter Renée met in the traveling caravan.
Enkelt: An ancient magical race responsible for creating the portals.
Etamin: The capital of The Unconquered Lands.
Eu’Sifr: The fae word for Earth, taken from the word Sifr to denote the lack of the ability of the humans to use magic.
Evangeline “Eva” Higgins: Our protagonist. A Kamalan born of Enkeltish heritage, taken from Faetir and raised on Earth.
Fae (fā): A long-lived and magical race native to Faetir. Most fae have innate magical abilities specific to their races. They also have the ability to weave raw magic for their purposes.
Faetir (fā-tear): A realm rich with raw magic, and home to the fae.
Faetir Pact: An accord struck between the peaceful nations of the realm, including: DeMarc, Augudece, Marcaug, and the largest nation of Mardec. It affords fae free travel and commerce between the nations.
Freya: A Chameleon in Mr. Roper’s agency.
Fiodoir (fē-door): A fae race native to Augudece. They are the most philosophical of the fae and are avid practitioners of the weave. The majority of Kamalan’s are given birth by Fiodoir parents.
The Forests of Pel: The forests south of Brynjar’s home are both beautiful and dangerous. Hundreds of species of flora can be found in the Forests of Pel. The combination of fertile soil, sunlight, and ocean moderated temperatures make it a perfect habitat for many plant species. The trade route from Lausern to Havn runs through the densest part of the forest. While the road is well-traveled and safe enough for a merchant conveys, lone riders and small groups have been known to be robbed by highwaymen.
Galdur: The ceremony performed by the Ionta in which living flesh is imbued with a weave.
Gianfar: The capital of DeMarc.
Glanfae: A term used to identify faelike creatures and monsters throughout the realm; underfae. Most have striking appearances and powerful abilities. Many fae consider the Maghentum glanfae.
Skrimsli (scrim-slē): A monstrous glanfae having two sets of arms, one set being shorter and armed with crab-like pinchers. The eyeless head is menacing with its with massive jaws and blood-curdling roar.
Glaspear: A specific weave for magical attack. A green flash of energy. Also, an innate ability of the Maghentum.
Grense: A city on the border of Northern Mardec and its parent nation, Mardec. Grense is the second-largest city in Mardec and the council seat for Northern Mardec and boasts a large tourism industry.
The Great Ending: The war between fae and humans that resulted in the closing of all portals to Earth.
Halrot: A fae race, considered Ra’Day. Halrots are skilled warriors.
Halvveis (hal-vās): A town situated midway along the trade route from Lausern to Havn in Northern Mardec.
Havn (hāv-en): Havn is a city on the coast of the Cothrom Sea. It is nestled on the north side of the sea. It is Northern Mardec’s largest port, but it is less than a third of the size of Rigel, the capitol, which sits on the south shore of the sea. Apart from being a major port for fishermen, Havn is home to seafarers of all types. The main portion of the city resides on the docks. Each dock serves a different purpose; fishing, recreation, military, tourism, and the less-than-reputable. Captain Bridger, the ships captain that brought Eva, Brynjar, and Derek to Cuan on the Island of Cailin, calls Havn his home.
Hodelov: An elected position, similar to a mayor or governor.
Iallach (ē-lɑk): A Visindi fae, and member of the Trusted Order. First Trusted of Alioth.
Ionta: An order of weavers among the Enkelts. The most magically powerful of the race.
Jadere (yɑ-deer-ɑ): A pig-like creature with a scaled back and six legs. The jadere are native to Reisende and are tough to kill.
Kai: Vitur’s son.
Kamalan: An entirely female race of Fae. Kamalans can be born from any of the fae races, except Sifr. When a female is born and identified as Kamalan, she is no longer referred to by her birth race. Kamalans live and train at Kamalan House, until they are bonded to another Fae or to the house.
Key: A códaithe that opens a portal.
Master Key: A key that will open any portal, except and Aonair Portal.
Kulden: A fae race native to Northern Mardec. The Kulden have the innate ability to affect water.
Lausern (low-sern): Lausern is the village where Eva Higgins discovered she was born. It is a small port town on the northern coast of Northern Mardec. Fishing is the largest industry, followed closely by wool. The two go hand-in-hand, since the waters off the northern coast are quite cold, bordering on freezing. The fisherman wear clothing made mostly of sheep’s wool and hide.
Lexot: An exotic ore found in abundance in Ra’Day, and lesser so in DeMarc. The magical Lexonium is forged from it. It is hard to come by, due to the fact that all Lexot mined in Ra’Day is banned.
Lexonium: The only metal in the realm able to hold a weave. It is highly sought after for its magical properties.
Madame Fionrai (fēn-ray): A Fiodoir fae and house-bonded Kamalan, before she was killed.
Madame Leigheas (lās): A Fiodoir fae and house-bonded Kamalan. Leigheas was the Healer of the House and ran the infirmary, until she was appointed Madame of the House following Fionrai’s demise.
Maghentum: The most prolific of the Ra’Day, the Maghentum are considered by most fae to be the most hideous and malignantly evil of all the races. They have large bulbous eyes, too big for their smooth hairless heads. Two ridges, like sister mountain ranges, run from their just above their eyes to the back of the their head, giving them an ever-scowling appearance.
Marcaug: The eastern most nation in the realm. Marcaug has the most fertile land in all of Faetir. Marcaug is also home to the Bondi fae.
Mardec: Mardec is the largest nation in Faetir and the seat of the ruling council at Rigel. Mardec is a mix of almost every climate and terrain, from the mountain highlands in Northern Mardec to the temperate weather on the Island of Cailin, to the plains and forest in the south.
Mawsum: A Halrot fae (Ra’Day). The leader of Calder’s Halrot scouts.
Mr. Roper: The leader of a covert intelligence agency employing Chameleons, Cleaners, and Cowboys.
Muzalim: A Halrot fae (Ra’Day). Calder’s lieutenant.
Nascosta: A slum town just outside of Alioth.
Nath: The capital of Deceau.
Northern Mardec: Home to the proud Sioc and Kulden races, Northern Mardec is a highland climate with many mountain ranges and is the home of the Third Standing. It is a semi-independent province of Mardec.
Opin Hurd: The innate ability of some Enkelts to create and open portals for its user.
Portal: Any fixed point in Faetir that teleports its user to a corresponding portal elsewhere on Faetir. Portals are marked by a line and circle design resembling the I/O symbol. Each portal has only one destination, and must be opened, or activated with either its own key, or a master key.
Aonair (ɑ-nare) Portal: A specific type of portal that can be opened with only one key.
Enni Portal: A specific type of portal that can be opened with any key.
Ra’Day: A nation island on Faetir home to the malignant and outcast races: Maghentum, Youssun, Halrot, and Trock. Also, a synonymous term used to describe any of those four races.
Ragazzo “Raga”: Abkam’s apprentice.
The Raven Sea: The sea the borders the western shore of Mardec.
Reisende (rə-shɑn-dɑ): The realm of the Enkelts. Translated from the old tongue as the land of the traveler.
Rigel: The capital of Mardec
Sasquan: A fae race native to the mountains of DeMarc. Large and boisterous, the Sasquan have a reputation as the center of attention in any gathering. The smallest of the race still round out at over seven feet tall. They are marked by their long spindly arms and are known as great spear throwers. The Sasquan’s innate ability is their strength, both body and mind. They are natural leaders. Their odd shaped tall bodies, with barrel chests and long limbs give them the appearance of a feeble giant. However, it is to anyone’s misfortune should they tangle with one in a fight.
Sahar: A Youssun fae (Ra’Day): Calder’s battle mage.
Scath: A Trock fae (Ra’Day). A soldier in Calder’s army. Scath has the ability to control and speak to shadows.
Shakti: The most powerful Enkelt weaver and leader of the Ionta.
Sifr (siff-r): A fae race native to Southeast Mardec. The Sifr are considered by most fae, if not by all, to be the most unfortunate of any creature. The Sifr possess no innate abilities and cannot weave raw magic. They are, however, like all fae, blessed with unusually long lives.
Sioc (sē-ɑ-k): A fae race native to the lands of Northern Mardec. Described as large in stature and having the ability to control the air around them.
Tapar: A Visindi fae. Director of the Antediluvian wing of the Atheneum. Raga’s old master.
The Third Standing: A formation of rock, consisting of three upright and inward curving stones etched with runes. Said to hold magical properties. Located in Northern Mardec.
The Trusted Order: An organization comprised of various fae, but all male, sworn to protect the Kamalans.
Tom and Hannah Higgins: Eva’s adopted Earth parents.
Topher: A Kulden fae, Tunnu’s successor in The Unconquered Lands.
Torthuil (tor-tōl): A large city near the southern coast of Mardec: Home to the Army at Torthuil, a contingent of the Mardecian army charged with the protection of the Cosan Pass.
Trock: A fae race, considered Ra’Day. Trock are lizard like in appearance and, like the Maghentum, are consider by some to be glanfae. Trocks are skilled scouts and spies.
Tua: A Visindi fae and house-bonded Kamalan. Tua is a powerful Mind Walker.
Tunnu: A Sasquan fae and the Premier of The Unconquered Lands. Before his death, his rule was defined by a heavy-hand and swift harsh justice.
The Unconquered Lands: A rogue nation, The Unconquered Lands is home to independently minded fae, whom many consider criminals. The arctic lands are ruled by a strict code, however. Unjustified violence is dealt with swiftly. The axiom of the land is “Do no harm, and stay out of my business.”
Uten: Ceann Olc’s right hand. A soulless killer devoted to the Olc. Uten wears a códaithe collar made of brass and lexonium, in which Ceann uses to communicate and control him.
Utlending: Outsider. Used commonly in The Unconquered Lands to refer to someone visiting, or who has not adopted the tenets of the land.
Visindi (vɪ-shen-dē): A fae race native to Augudece. Visindi are considered to be extremely intelligent and some of the most proficient in the weave. The innate abilities of the Visindi are vast; some even have telepathic powers, known as Mind Walkers.
Vitur: Leader of the Enkelts.
Voldsum: A fae race native to Deceau. Voldsum are some of the fiercest warriors in the realm.
Walter Renée: The enigmatic professor searching for answers about his past.
Weave: A spell; raw magic wielded for a purpose.
The Wild Coast: A turbulent area in DeMarc, marked by high cliffs, rocky shores, and violent seas. It is an area rich in lexot ore.
Youssun: A fae race, considered Ra’Day. Deemed in some circles to be the most magically powerful fae race, having magical abilities far surpassing even the Fiodoir or Visindi. Youssun have a reputation for using any means, magical or otherwise, to serve their own purposes. Youssun make very powerful battle mages.
